As an important part of North Aiken
Elementary
School,
we must take pride in the efforts to follow our
guidelines for success.
The following expectations for behavior have
been established to ensure a safe
and positive
learning environment for each student.
RESPECT: “I will treat every person
with dignity.”
SELF-CONTROL: “I
will choose to do what is right regardless of my feelings.”
SAFETY: “I will
promote the well-being of myself and others.”
SCHOOL PRIDE: “My
actions will bring honor to North Aiken Elementary School.”
The staff
at North Aiken Elementary School will help you achieve success
by helping you solve problems and by protecting your right to learn.
In the
classroom, students are expected to follow the teacher’s classroom
rules. Teachers will vary their activities; therefore, each teacher will
clearly communicate his/her expectations for behavior and the consequences of
breaking school rules depend on the seriousness of the behavior and student’s
past involvement in the type of behavior. Loss of recess, parent
contact, and team isolation are the most common forms of teacher
punishment. In-school suspension and out-of-school suspension are the
types of punishment issued by the administration depending on the severity of
the action.
The provisions of this code apply to conduct during the normal school day,
on school owned vehicles, and during school-sponsored activities that take
place after normal school hours.
Parents are important partners in ensuring appropriate behavior in the
classroom. The administration will make an attempt to contact the
parent of every child who is referred to the office for a violation of the
Aiken County Student Code of Conduct.
Riding the bus is a PRIVILEGE, which may be revoked. Students are
expected to maintain proper school behavior while riding the bus to and from
school or on a field trip. Students who do not behave properly
jeopardize the safety and well being of all the students on the bus.
Because bus transportation is considered an extension of the regular school
program, students who violate behavior expectations while riding the bus will
be subject to penalties established for misbehavior while students are on the
school premises.
In order to make our buses as safe as possible, the following rules must be
obeyed:
Always stay seated.
Arms and heads must stay inside the windows at all times.
Unnecessary conversation with the bus driver should be kept to a
minimum to avoid distracting the driver.
Yelling, shouting, or loud conversations will not be allowed.
Absolute silence is required at all railroad crossings.
The bus driver is in charge of the bus and students.
Students must obey the bus driver.
The driver has the right to assign seats, if necessary, to
promote order on the bus.
Eating, drinking, smoking, or animals are not allowed on the
bus.
Stand away from the roadway while waiting for the bus.
Walk ten feet in front of the bus and wait for the driver’s
signal before crossing the road.
Always be on time. Students who are late for the bus may
be left and are responsible for their own transportation at that point.
School and bus rules apply to behavior while waiting for the bus
or departing the bus.
REMEMBER: BUS RIDING IS A
PRIVILEGE
Students may only ride the bus to which they are assigned. If, in the event
of unusual circumstances, a student needs to ride home on a different bus,
prior WRITTEN permission must be requested. The parent/guardian must
send the student to school with a written note explaining the circumstances
and a telephone number in which a parent/guardian can be reached. The
administration will determine if the need is valid and if there is room on
the bus for the student to ride.
In the event that a bus breaks down or is running late, students will be kept
on the bus and leave only with the instructions of the bus driver. If
parents become concerned and need information concerning a late bus, please
call one of the following phone numbers:

person to knowingly or intentionally possess a controlled substance
(depressant, stimulant, counterfeit or illegal drug). Any students who
violate this act are subject to suspension and/or expulsion from school and
prosecution by law enforcement officer. * Students are not allowed to
knowingly possess, use, transmit, or to be under the influence of any
narcotic drug, hallucinogenic drug, amphetamine, barbiturate, marijuana,
alcoholic beverage, or intoxicant of any kind, nor to knowingly possess, use
or transmit paraphernalia related to the illegal use of drugs:
*on the school grounds during and immediately after school hours;
*on the school grounds at any other time when the school is being used by any
school group;
OR, *off the school grounds at a school activity, function, or event.
Possession, Use, and/ or Under the Influence:
If possible, the drugs and/or paraphernalia are confiscated.
Parents or guardians are notified and asked to come to school.
The violation and accompanying evidence are reported to the local
and state authorities.
The first offense may result in expulsion for the remainder of
the school year.
Selling, Transmitting (Pushing) Drugs or other
Illicit Drugs:
If possible, the drugs and/or paraphernalia are confiscated.
Parents or guardians are notified and asked to come to school.

authorities.
The student may be permanently expelled from school.
Drug Paraphernalia:
Possession is construed to mean on the person himself, in his
locker, books, desk, bookbag, or any other student
property, which at the time is or was on school property.
A distinction is to be made between the casual distribution or transfer of
drugs and the so-called “pusher”. A student guilty of the
casual sharing of drugs is considered as
being in “possession”.
“Paraphernalia” means any instrument, device,
article, or contrivance used, designed for use, or intended for use in
ingesting, smoking, administering, or preparing marijuana, hashish oil, or
cocaine.

Students in ISS or OSS
will not be allowed to attend or participate in any
school-sponsored activity on the day/days of the suspension.
Students placed in ISS will be given assignments by the subject teacher
(through the supervisor) and will be expected to study the entire length of
their ISS. All work will be supervised.
Program
Objectives:
The
in-school suspension (ISS) program provides a substitute to suspensions that
would normally require disassociation from the school. Students
suspended from the regular learning program are permitted to remain in a
structured environment, yet are isolated from the mainstream student body.
Objectives:
*To reduce the number of
out-of-school suspensions by providing an alternative program. This does not
rule out the possibility of out-of-school suspension if the situation
warrants.
*To provide a setting within the school in which the student may continue
his/her academic work.
*To assist the faculty in working with students with inappropriate behavior.
Procedures:
Only an administrator may place students in
ISS.
Students report to ISS at their assigned time.
Students not behaving or not following required rules during ISS will be
picked up by
their parent that day or suspended from school the following school day.
Students are not counted absent and do not get zeroes. Students do
their assignments, eat lunch, and have access to the restroom. A staff
member is assigned to provide supervision and instruct students in developing
positive attitudes and behavior.
Student
Rules for In-School Suspension:
1.Students will report to
ISS when directed to do so by their teacher.
2. Students will conduct themselves in an acceptable manner.
3. Students will speak and act in a respectful way to the assistant and all
employees at school.
4. Students will miss all school activities while serving time in ISS.
5. Students will not chew gum, eat, or drink in ISS.
6. Students will do their assigned work neatly and will correct all errors as
assignments are checked. All assignments must be completed.
7. Students will not sleep in ISS.
8. Students will stay in their assigned places and raise their hands to
request help.
9. If a student is absent from school on the day assigned, the student will
serve on another assigned day.
10. Students must serve consecutive days, except in the case of illness.
11. If possible, students will be given assignments by their teachers.
If students fail to bring work, the ISS instructor will provide assignments
including listening to books on
tape and completing journal responses.

Students
who are suspended from school will not be allowed to attend or participate in
any school-sponsored activity on the day/days of the suspension.
Make-up Work for
Suspension:
It is the student's
responsibility upon return from a suspension to ask each teacher for the
make-up work. Students suspended from school will receive 0's on all
work missed unless made up within 50 (50) school days following the last day
of suspension.
Accumulated Suspensions:
A student who is subject to suspension a fifth time in any given year may be
recommended for expulsion.
