Introduction
Thank you for volunteering in our school. We ask that you follow the procedures and policies listed below.
Volunteers are an important asset to any school, and we are appreciative of everyone who is willing to commit their time and energy in helping to educate the children at J. D. Lever. In order to volunteer at J. D. Lever, guidelines need to be followed.
Volunteer Guidelines
- Every volunteer must register in the main office upon arrival.
- Outside arrangements must be made for child care of non-school age children.
- Volunteers will refrain from visiting classrooms unless they are volunteering in the classroom.
- J. D. Lever is a cell phone-free school. Cell phones should be turned off upon arrival.
- Volunteers will follow district policies regarding interaction with children.
- Volunteers are expected to maintain the confidentiality of the students, staff, and school with other people.
- Volunteers should dress appropriately and be an example to our students.
- The staff of J. D. Lever is responsible for instruction of students during the school day. Volunteers are under the direction of the supervising teacher or staff member.
In order to volunteer at J. D. Lever, a volunteer application needs to be filled out and returned to the school office. The application is located on our website or a copy may be requested from the office. All volunteers must attend a volunteer orientation. Orientations will be held throughout the year.
Orientation
All volunteers must attend an orientation before working as a volunteer. Classroom teachers will be responsible for providing the orientation.
Parking
Please park in the parking lot near the front entrance to the school. The parking area near the bus loop is reserved for faculty and staff.
Sign-in Procedures
Upon arrival at school, please report to the office and sign-in. Volunteers are asked to sign in and sign out in the volunteer section of the sign-in log book located on the counter in the office. You will receive a J. D. Lever sticker to identify you to the faculty and staff as a visitor/volunteer. Stickers must be worn at all times when you are in the building. Before you leave, please report to the office to sign out and return your sticker.
Confidentiality
As a matter of professional ethics, volunteers do not discuss teacher, student or school affairs with other people. This includes any student, including relatives, who is not a dependent of the volunteer. It is extremely important that confidentiality be upheld at all times. Volunteers should discuss any concerns directly and exclusively with the supervising teacher/staff member.
Dress Code
Volunteers should dress appropriately. Tank tops, halter tops, sheer blouses, or any clothing that exposes the midriff are not allowed. Clothing that displays any pictures, words, or phrases that are obscene, vulgar, and offensive or are inappropriate for the school setting is also not allowed. The school administration may request volunteers who are inappropriately dressed to leave the school grounds.
Smoking
Smoking or the use of any tobacco products is not permitted on school grounds.
Non-School Age Children
Outside arrangements must be made for child care of non-school age children. Due to liability issues, children not attending J. D. Lever Elementary are not allowed at school.
Classroom Visits
Due to the disruptive nature of classroom visits. volunteers should refrain from visiting classrooms unless their own children are in the classroom.
Telephones
The use of school telephones is restricted to school-related telephone calls. J. D. Lever is a cell phone-free zone. Cell phones must be off while at school.
Procedures with Children
Volunteers should not have any interaction with chiildren unless they meet the school district's guidelines and policies. Sections of School District Policies GBEB, GBEBB, JRA, and JRA-R are located on the District website and can be reached by following the link below.
Teacher Directions
Volunteers are under the direction of the teacher they are volunteering to help. Volunteers should direct any questions to the teacher they are assisting. As a reminder, teachers are responsible for the instruction of students and should not be interrupted while teaching.
Emergency Procedures
Volunteers should be familiar with emergency procedures related to the area where they are working. Please contact the supervising teacher concerning these procedures.
Outside Materials/Rewards
The supervising teacher will provide all materials needed by the volunteer, including rewards or incentives for students.
