1.
Student attendance will be recorded on a class period basis.
2.
Under the Educational Improvement Act of 1984, students may not miss more
than ten (10) days of school and receive credit. Students who accumulate
more than ten (10) absences may be retained.
a.
absences for sickness certified by a doctor’s statement
b.
absences due to death in the family
c.
absences due to religious holidays when prior approval is obtained
through the principal’s office
d.
absences due to legal summons to appear
e.
absences that have prior approval of the principal
In-school suspensions will not count as absences.
Out-of-school suspensions will count as lawful absences.
Unlawful absences include:
a.
Defined as a student’s willful absence from school without the
knowledge of the parents or a student’s absence from school without
cause with the knowledge of the parents. If this occurs, the student
will be disciplined according to the discipline code.
b.
Family vacations and trips will be considered as unlawful absences.
3.
Students in Grade 8 who are enrolled in high school credit courses must meet
the requirements for Grades 9-12 for those classes.

Students who have been absent from school are required to bring a written
excuse from the doctor, parent, or guardian. The excuse should state:
d.
doctor’s, parent’s, or guardian’s signature
5.
Upon returning to school after an absence, the student should:
a.
Submit a note of explanation from the parent, guardian, physician, or
other health provider to the Attendance Office within five school days.
Failure to submit a written excuse for absences within this time period
will result in the absence being marked unlawful regardless of reason.
b.
Receive an admit slip from the Attendance Office.
c.
Present the admit slip to each classroom teacher and have the slip
signed.
d.
Turn the admit slip in to the last period teacher.
6.
Parents may be required to attend an INTERVENTION CONFERENCE if their
child is absent three (3) consecutive unlawful days or accumulates five (5) total
unlawful absences. The District Attendance Office will also be contacted and
may petition the Family Court as required by law if the student’s attendance
does not improve.
7.
Students returning from suspension are to check in with the assistant principal.
8. Students are responsible for make-up work due to absences.
a.
Students are expected to make up any missed class work for any
absence. This includes assignments missed due to suspensions.
b.
It is the student’s responsibility to obtain the missed assignment from
the teacher and to turn the assignment in within an appropriate
amount of time.
c.
A day’s absence does not excuse a student from responsibility for all
homework to be made up on the day of his or her return.
d.
Assignments should be turned in within 5 days of the student’s return
to school. Only in extreme cases or prolonged absence will more than
one week be allowed for work to be made up unless the principal
grants permission.
e.
Please call the office for assignments when the student is going to be
absent for 3 or more days. Please allow one full school day in order to
obtain assignments from all teachers.
f.
Students who are absent less than 3 days should call their classmates
or wait until their return to school and request assignments from their
teacher.
