Aiken
County Mathematics Alignment Project
|
|
The Aiken
County Mathematics Alignment Project (ACMAP) is an innovative
partnership among the University of South Carolina Aiken, Aiken
Technical College, and the Aiken County School District. The
project goals are to attain mathematics competencies at the
middle school, high school, and freshman college entry levels
that ensure progressive student transitions from one level to
the next; and, to explore common aspects of best practices for
acceleration of student learning in mathematics. Funding for
the initiative is provided by the co-sponsoring partner institutions
and the school district including a grant this year from Honeywell
and Savannah River Remediation provided through Public Education
Partners.
Since its inception in 2008, the ACMAP has
brought together mathematics education faculty from both campuses
and local mathematics teachers to examine student achievement
data and the scope and sequence of high school mathematics
in relationship to entry-level college mathematics courses.
On-going sessions are planned and provided during the school
year by the ACMAP Committee, which includes a teacher representative
from each of the seven high schools, two middle schools, district
administrators, and higher education faculty.
As a part
of the ACMAP, 25 Aiken County middle and high school mathematics
teachers will participate in a five-day Summer Algebra Institute.
The Institute, which began on Saturday, May 14, is scheduled
for June 6 -9th from 8:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m in USC Aiken’s
B&E Building, Room 138. Instruction and modeling of effective
methodologies will be provided by faculty members of the partnering
institutions, leading statewide consultants in the area of
mathematics, local classroom teachers, and the staff of the
CSRA Regional S2MART Center located at the Ruth Patrick Science
Education Center.
