Top-shelf Cafeterias rewarded with perfect score!

The school food service employees of Aiken County have much to celebrate as they kick off another year of preparing healthy food for school children. The annual Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) inspections graded several schools the rare score of 100%. Glenda Wafford, district SFS director, and Wesley Hightower, school board member, joined SC State Department of Education’s Office of Health and Nutrition representative Keith Ringer as he awarded each school with the official 100% DHEC certificates. The Office of Health and Nutrition administers the National School Lunch, Afterschool Snack and School Breakfast Programs, the Food Distribution Program, and the Nutrition Education and Training Program. Their services are utilized by South Carolina public schools, residential child care institutions, and private and parochial schools.

“All of our school cafeterias do a remarkable job of providing thorough training to all SFS employees, keeping a clean work environment, and serving nutritional, good food to our students and staff. Safety is key when working in kitchens and serving food. We are very proud of our perfect scorers, however, feeding children is its own reward,” states Glenda Wafford, district SFS director.

During the 2009-10 school year, the Aiken County Public School cafeterias served over 3,708,990 meals; that’s 20,049 breakfasts and lunches per day.
