On Friday,
April 29th Leavelle McCampbell Middle School’s PTO hosts
its first “Let’s Move” Social. The PTO sponsored
this social in response to First Lady Michelle Obama’s
"Let's Move" anti-childhood obesity campaign. The
initiative’s goal is “America’s move to raise
a healthier generation of kids” (http://www.letsmove.gov/).
The social began with a speaker from DHEC Aiken County Public
Health Department, Corine Simpkins, Health Educator who spoke
with students about the importance of eating healthy, exercising
daily, and getting proper rest. PTO President Monika Oliver
then solicited assistance from the faculty/staff with leading
students in exercise. Jessica Johnson, Synergistic Lab Aide
and Bartolome Grejalde, SPED teacher led the students in Zumba.
Students left the social energized and informed. Packets containing
information on the benefits of eating healthy and getting exercise
were given to each student. The PTO plans to carry over our
Move More Initiative during the Community Fun Day and Yard Sale
on May 28th from 8:00am to 2:00pm. There will be basketball
shoot offs, hula hoop and jump rope contests every hour. As
a result of the success of the social, the faculty/staff will
be participating in Zumba at the school on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
