Several
schools in Aiken County are recognized statewide and nationally
for implementing model programs in the arts, middle school education,
physical education, science education, athletics, community
service initiatives, etc. These honors are attributed
to the hard work of accomplished school administrators, teachers,
students, and parents. Recognitions include: The
Verner Award, Palmetto's Finest, Blue Ribbon Candidate, National
School of Excellence, Principal of the Year, Milken Family Foundation
National Educators' Award, State Teacher of the Year, Service
Learning, State Agriculture Awards, Vocational Education Awards,
State Band Competitions, and others. Our teachers amass
over a half million dollars annually through writing educational
grants, including grants provided by the Public Education Partners(PEP).
Considering all competitive grants, the school district
accumulates over $1.2 million annually.

Distance
learning was made available through a $241,000 grant from
the Governor's Technology Initiative. Also, a $285,000
state grant was awarded to set up a tape and delay television
center as one of a few in the state. An additional $257,000 grant
was awarded to expand distance education to a middle school and
an alternative school. This grant expands our educational
partners to include Allendale County Public Schools, University
of South Carolina - Departments of Mathematics and Science Marine
Biology, the University of South Carolina-Aiken, and the Governor's
School for Arts and Humanities. The District offers on
an average twenty courses a semester and serves approximately
two hundred students. This program serves as a model for
the State Department of Education and distance education throughout
the state of South Carolina, and received national recognition
through the Smithsonian Institute, Computer World Award. |

Statistics |
- School
facilities are among the best in the state and nation.
The vast majority of the schools have received renovations
and additions. Many are relatively new (not more that
10-15 years old on an average).
|
- The 2005-06
State Report Card shows three point nine percent (3.9
percent) of our students left school or dropped out before
receiving a high school diploma. Seventeen years ago
the rate was 6.1 percent. The 2005-06
State Report Card also shows an 74.4 percent graduation
rate for Aiken County.
|
- Our
classrooms are technologically rich. There is an average of
one computer for every five students. Schools have internet
capability, as well.
|
- Our school
system serves 93 percent of all school-age children in Aiken
County. This compares impressively to other large school districts
in the state with similar demographics.
|
- All of
our schools, except charter schools, are fully accredited
by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
